Van road trip in Sweden : heading for the great northern outdoors

That’s exactly what you can expect on a Scandinavian road trip. But which route should you choose ? From coastal landscapes to vast pine forests, discover the van itinerary that suits you best. Let the Swedish adventure begin !

Which itinerary should you choose for a successful van road trip in Sweden ?

From Stockholm to Swedish Lapland: the northern route

This itinerary is a loop of just over 3,000 km from Stockholm to the north of the country, all the way to Swedish Lapland. It requires a stay of at least 15 days. In Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, don’t miss a stroll through Gamla Stan, the historic center. You’ll be charmed by its cobbled streets and colorful facades.

Head toward Lake Siljan and the villages of Tällberg and Leksand. The lake’s deep blue contrasts with the bright red cottages along its shores. Continuing north, stop by Lake Ratansbyn, then Lake Östersund. Finally, reach Sarek National Park. The northernmost point of this itinerary is Abisko National Park. Admire the stunning Abiskojakka canyon or Lake Abiskojaure. Take the cable car or hike to the top for a breathtaking view.

Head back down along the east, stopping at Skuleskogen National Park. There you’ll find an impressive gorge over 100 meters long. You can admire it from below, but also take in the view from above with a beautiful hike from the northern entrance to the top of Slåttdalsberget. Before reaching Stockholm, stop by the Storforsen rapids for a refreshing break by the water.

The west coast and the Bohuslän archipelago

We recommend starting this route in Malmö, an industrial city. Apart from the Turning Torso the tallest tower in Scandinavia Malmö doesn't offer much of particular interest. But it’s the entry point into the country if you're coming by van via Denmark (see below). Then head up the west coast to Gothenburg. You can explore the city and its parks, but it's mainly the departure point for the islands of the archipelago. Reach Brännö, Styrsö, or Donsö by boat from Gothenburg a common mode of transport in the region. These three islands offer similar landscapes and atmosphere.

Continue your journey to the Bohuslän archipelago. It’s made up of many small granite islands that look as if they’ve been carved off the coast. Some are so close together that you’ll feel like you’re on a lake. Each one has a charming little harbor and is connected to the others by bridges or ferry crossings. Marstrand is the most touristy island, while Tjörn and Orust offer lovely villages to explore.

Keep heading up along the Bohuslän coast. We recommend stopping in the villages of Lysekil and Smögen to see their colorful fishermen’s huts. Then head to Fjällbacka and climb the granite hill for a stunning view over the town and the sea. Take advantage of your van road trip along the west coast to go kayaking an essential activity in the region. As a little bonus on your route, continue on to the charming Koster Islands, accessible by ferry from Strömstad.

The lakes and forests of Värmland: authentic Sweden off the beaten path

In the Värmland region, nature reigns supreme! This is an untouristed area, far from the beaten track. It’s also where you’re most likely to spot moose and beavers. Drive along scenic roads through hilly landscapes, dense forests, and of course, countless lakes. Värmland isn’t nicknamed the region of 10,000 lakes for nothing ! You can also discover Klarälven, Sweden’s longest river, which flows for 460 km.

This region is perfect for outdoor activities: hiking, skiing, canoeing, fishing, cycling... there’s something for everyone. Several kilometers of cycling and mountain biking trails cross through the region and its landscapes. The most beautiful hiking trails can be found in the Glaskogen Nature Reserve. To cool off, enjoy a swim in Lake Vänern, in Karlstad. And to extend your journey, head toward Tiveden National Park.

For a nature-filled and sporty road trip, Värmland is without a doubt the region to explore! It’s also an ideal place to practice wild camping.

Practical tips for traveling in a camper van in Sweden

Driving in Sweden: rules and safety

Traffic rules aren’t very different from those in France, but here are the main ones :

  • Just like in France, you drive on the right side of the road.
  • Kindness behind the wheel is a must in Sweden!
  • Cyclists always have the right of way.
  • Low beam headlights are mandatory day and night.
  • The legal blood alcohol limit is lower than in France (0.2 g/l), so it’s best not to drink before driving.
  • From November to April, snow tires are mandatory.
  • A tip to avoid hitting wildlife: drive in the middle of the road when you're alone.

Where to sleep in a camper van in Sweden: rest areas, campsites, wild camping

The right of access to nature applies in Sweden, just like in other Scandinavian countries. This means you can sleep almost anywhere in your van, as long as you don’t disturb local residents, leave the place clean, and remain discreet. If you want access to more amenities, you can stop at service areas or campsites.

Preparing your van for northern conditions

Be aware that nights in Sweden can be chilly, even in summer. It’s essential to have a van equipped with a heating system. If you’re traveling to Lapland in winter, snow tires are mandatory.

Budget, fuel, food: what to expect

The cost of living in Sweden is only slightly higher than in France—nothing like its neighbor Norway. For fuel, for instance, the cost is about the same. Another piece of good news for a van road trip in Sweden: all highways are free! For certain cities and bridges, an urban toll is charged automatically via your license plate.
